Hysterectomy: Hospital Stay and Expected Pain

How long is the hospital stay for a hysterectomy and how painful is it?

It will depend on whether it is done through the vagina or by cutting through the abdominal wall.

Abdominal hysterectomies usually leave the patient in the hospital for five days, and they are substantially painful. Strong injected narcotics are the pain relief given. Also, the at-home recovery period is longer.

Vaginal hysterectomies take about 2-4 days in hospital. They still require narcotics at the beginning, but in less amounts, and in shorter time frames than would be required in the abdominal hysterectomies.
